A sad fact.

People are stupid.

Let that sink in past the initial reaction for a moment and think about the phrase. People (more than one usually 5 or more) are stupid (unintelligent, ignorant, panicky, illogical). Its a sad fact of life that we as a species lose our fucking minds when we are in a group together. Now, I am not saying that you the reader are stupid (hell you are reading this so IQ of 125 + assured,) or that I am stupid. A single person can be highly intelligent, logical and can understand the reasonable arguments for a differing point of view. However, once you get people in a group we become sheep. Often one person can lead a group of people like sheep, this is how pointless riots start, looting, hate crimes, we dont think. This has been hard wired into us since before civilization, and we are still as stupid in groups as ever, we have not grown out of it.

"But" you say "Surley all out scientific achievements show we are nt that primitive any longer." Ahh but those are achievements of individuals, and it still has to get through the panicky group mind that its beneficial for us as a society. Some great advancements dont make it that far because we are idiots. Stem Cell Research, due to a few people advising large groups that this is morally wrong, has been retarded by this thinking. Western civilization had a thousand year halt on progress due to the rise of Christianity and the Dark Ages. But surely you think religion would be a cure for this, that all the good works it has done and inspired show a cure for our herd panic. Nope, for every mother Theresa spreading good will, you get a spanish inquisition. Reading this is not going to change a thing, however realizing this about ourselves is a first step in change. So next time you see a riot or a board of education passing a referendum to put stickers about creationism on science text books, just remember that people are stupid.

  1. Good point. The public, while oriented, does tend to degrade the potential of the individual.

  2. I think the greatest piece of evidence to your theory would have to be the Tea Party as it is today. The majority of them are rabid, racist, red neck, homophobes, that rally against progress at every turn.
